I'm flying next Tuesday and am really scared. I know that flying is the safest form of travel, etc... I've flown all my life, at least 60 times, and only ever ran into problems once. I'm still petrified, though. It makes no sense whatsoever, but I guess phobias rarely do.

It affects me physically - I get this hideous indigestion, which feels like a huge knot in my stomach, whenever a member of my family flies. It never stops until after I hear they've landed safely. It's really bad at the moment and will be for the rest of the night, which will be fun as I have to get up to run my store in the morning.

I'm just so scared! How can I stop worrying myself sick in this fashion? Please help, any advice would be great.

Thanks.

Get drunk so you more relaxed and pass out before you land.

Oh , I know the feeling. I always traveled alone.

I realized later that it was because of what I thought flying would be like. I had a fear that you were up straight when you took off. I held onto my purse scared to death. Then, I was o k because it was nothing like that.

I have flown probably 20 times including to Spain and France by myself...

The best part is the velocity before you take off. I also had a sinking feeling about having to get on a nine seater..that would be about 18 seats in total..I was so afraid, and even more so!! I could not believe I had to get on that plane.

WEll, you guessed...that is by far my favorite airplane..I can put my head in the aisle and watch the mountains as we land. I can't wait to get in another plane!

Remember how scared you were to go to kindergarten the first day? You made it!! No fear!

It's not flying you should be scared of, but the landing and taking off!

Most accidents happen when the plane lands or takes off, but once the plane is airborne, things should settle down. Just look out for people acting weirdly though. Dark skinned chaps with rucksacks and stuff. Be scared then too.

Hi

I used to feel that way too. I know exactly what you mean about the knot in the stomach and the panic feelings and the dread. I was in such a state one time that I had to cancel the holiday and not go! I flew last week though and I was fine, a little nervous, but OK. I saw a homeopath about something else and my fear came up as part of another conversation, and she gave me some treatment, which worked perfectly. I don't know what it was, but it worked. See a homeopath TODAY!!!! Good luck, and enjoy your flight.

Realizing that the airline are safer then traveling in a car by more then 300% 2005 had over 39,189 accident reported compared to the airlines.
You have to calm yourself down and know that flying is safe and when you fly occupy yourself play a game read or sleep. But remember it is safe.

I'm scared of flying too! Just try not to imagine the plane breaking in two. Don't think about plummeting several miles with pieces of burning wreckage crashing down around you. Try not to worry about the ground rushing up to squish...I suppose this isn't helping. Seriously though, I'm just as bad as you are when I have to fly. I get all nervous and keep thinking about all sorts of horrible senarios. I know flying is statistically the safest form of travel, but if I have car troubles or get into a crash, the car doesn't continue to fall thousands of feet. Sorry if I'm making you nervous, I'm just trying to point out that our fear isn't irrational. You know what helps me? I try to get a window seat. I'm often so fascinated by looking down on the clouds and checking out all the scenery, that I forget my situation. I try to think about how everything looks so small. It reminds me how small my everyday world is. I try to think about all the people throughout history who would have given anything to experience what I'm experiencing. I'm often so engrossed in thought and overwhelmed with awe, that I forget about my personal safety. Say a prayer before take off. My advise, look out the window and marvel at what an interesting world we live in. My favorite part is taking off and landing. Statistically that is the most dangerous part of flying. I try to imagine myself on a roller coaster.

i have a fear of flying also, i always try to read a book to take my mind off it and it also makes the flight go quicker. At the end of the day if it crashes you wont know too much about it. How many planes fly around the world on a daily basis? and how many crash?
