i know there not all the most obvious places of dry skin but im sure it is because its red and bumpy and feels scaly. it doesnt seem to bother him, but its very very cold where we live and i dont want it to get worse. the baby lotions are not doing ANYTHING ive used them night and day. is there anything else i can use for a young toddler? i use vaseline on his cheeks and chin but im not sure i should slick the kid up with vaseline. are there any other severe dry skin lotion i could use that would clear it up?

Try to limit bathing to every other day or every third day if its really bad. If you do need to bathe in between those days, don't use soap. Soap really dries out their skin.

For lotion, I use Aveeno. It works really well on my kids.
Oh, and make sure you use a humidifier in your home. We live in a small house and we have 3.

Here is what I do.
1. Aquaphor works wonders. It is in the diaper rash area and lotion area. I put it on my kids face every time they leave the house.
2. Immediately after a bath I put Vanicream over the entire body. If you go to your pharmacy area (even at target) and ask for it, they will give it to you. It is NOT a prescription, but it doesn't interact with anything like prescriptions, so they keep it there.
3. If really bad, then I will put aquaphor on the really bad areas before bed. That should clear it up some.
It sounds like your kids have what mine to, it is called eczema. You can take them to the dr or dermatologist. I have friends that have, and they use this stuff too. Also DON'T use soap and such on the body when bathing. It dries it out even more. I only use soap on areas that need it, bottom, hands, and feet. If it gets really bad also don't give baths. Showers let them not sit in the soap. Also the cooler the water the better. OH and maybe in the winter when it is so dry, try not to bathe every day.
Vanicream also has a website that sells soaps and such too.
Good Luck!

My 21 month old has the same problem and I'd find myself lotioning him up every half hour or so until I realized the lotion didn't work.

I bought a more expensive lotion....Nivea. It's in a blue round jar. It looks and feels more like crisco but it works beautifully! Also, when my son got the red scaly skin on his arms, I'd slick him up with nivea, cut off the foot of my daughters sock (they're a bit longer) and i'd put the sock over his arms so the lotion gets soaked in.

good luck!

I would suggest Aquaphor, but that is of a vaseline consistency. I've found that Cetaphil cream (not lotion) works well on my 9 month old's dry spots and rubs in better than Aquaphor. It's not greasy either.

Try fewer baths I know this sounds weird but babies and toddlers have sensitive skin and some times it helps not to bate them as often also try some eucerin calming cream you can pick it up pretty much anywhere its what my Doctor told my mom to use on my baby sister's skin b/c see too suffered from very dry skin from the moment se was born...hope that helps!

try eucerin cream or aquaphor. my son had a rash on his cheeks from the cold and that is what the pediatrician told me to use. it is kind of expensive, but a little goes a long way! his cheeks were soft in a matter of days!

You can use vaseline, you could also use something like Desitin or something for diaper rash since they are for dry skin as well.

Sounds like my son, who now has severe eczema. Try Shea Butter, you can get it at most health food stores and it works wonderfully!
