You are not evil. I think its just migrating season and there could have been just another bird around that you were just not aware of that they were cawing at. We get Crows here in Oregon all the time. The most in a group I've seen is maybe 20-25. But never that many. Which makes me think its migration time since it is Winter time. I'm a member of the Audobon Club.

Are you sure they were crows or blackbirds? This time of year blackbirds gather in enormous flocks and tend to all land at the same time to forage. I'm in rural Illinois, they cover entire pastures at times.
