Hello~
I think the best way to spend your Chinese New Year is to go with your Chinese/Taiwanese friends to celebrate the holidays with their family and friends. You'll be able to personally experience the most important Chinese holiday, enjoy great authentic food, the fellowship/friendship/fun gatherings, play games, play firewords, and maybe get some Hon Bow (the red envelops with cash inside;p). I also enjoyed going to the markets during day time and night markets in the evening for all the food, noise and good bargains:) There are usually lots of concerts and event shows during Chinese New Year that you can participate, especially in big cities, like Taipei, Taichung and Gaoshiun. The department stores like Sogo will have a whole bunch of activities going on as well. No matter where you go, hope you have fun and enjoy yourself. I wish I could be there to celebrate as well;p

Yes- Guess Who's got it right. Chinese New Year is a good time for you to go climb the mountains around Taipei, and to see the sights, because all the people leave the city to be with their families in the country (always somewhere else). Weeel, you might get to hear lots of firecrackers on NYears eve... but don't forget that New Year goes on for 4 days.
If you can, stay around for 2 more weeks, because the Lantern Festival starts then. It's really worth seeing.

If ur a visitor: Do all the cultural things, visit all the cultural places and buy some earplugs for all the cultural firecrackers.
If you live and work here: Then you are probably an English teacher, so get enough rest before facing the craziness of you buxiban or kindy again. And...e...drink lots of 7-11 beer - it helps you sleep when teenagers shoot firecrackers all night beneath your window and terrified dogs howl in agony.
Happy New Year, mate!
