I have had some recent experience with this....
You need to disassemble the ENTIRE laptop and use an electrical solvent to clean all of the components. When you open it up, you will find a sticky tar substance coating almost everything and only electrical solvent will clean it. Make sure you spray the solvent on a cloth (or q-tip for the small stuff) - don't spray directly on the components.
Gun Scrub will do, but it will melt plastic, so be careful.
Be sure to get the fan and CPU heat sink because it will have attracted a ton of the tar.
When you see stuff like that, it is hard to imagine that people begin smoking in the first place. Yuck!

Any parts or covers you can TAKE OFF, wash with 409.
Any you can NOT take off, use a CLEAN washcloth SOAKED with 409 and THEN carefully wrung out, SO THAT it is NOT DRIPPING !!
Scrub hard, but try not to get liquids into the electronics!!!!!
I recommend rinsing your Wash Cloth in CLEAN, WARM water when done with the foregoing, wringing it out well and wiping down once more.
409 should get the cigarette smoke coating and many other stains off. You may have to wet the rag with a little more 309 and scrub harder ifor difficult stains.
Some dollar stores/other stores also sell a similar product called AWESOME ORANGE. This comes in a similar botttle that sprays, all ORANGE in color. Works just as well as 409 and has added benefit of an orangey fresh smell!
Again, do not get this stuff into your electronics!!!!!!!!
Can be used for cleaning screen, but be more gentle AND ALWAYS remove residue with rinsed warm water wash cloth. Never spray this stuff on screen and leave it on for a long time, nor allow it to drip around.

Eventually it goes away, although some will linger for sometime. With the lap top you can't really take it apart, the smoke is embedded in any dust that is inside. Leaving it outside on nice days will help too. It is portable, when the weather is nice you can sit out side and work with it. Let it breath a little fresh air in. Some of those sachet things around it in the house would help too.

The way laptops are de-odorized is they are put into a large plastic bag along with a de-odorizer. Those lap-tops in a used computer store are done in this fashion. Wick pull up stem deodorizer is what they use inside the bag. You can use almost any sort of deodorizer you choose. Of course, dont use an aerosol, use a solid or a liquid with a wick. It takes a couple days to de-odorize tobacco smoke.

I've tried cleaning computers that have been used by a drug addict... also called a "smoker" and I have never been able to get ALL of that stench out of the machine... even with a complete disassembly and cleaning.
