I have a vague assumption, but would like your input. To date, I can't say that I've been promoted, etc.. in past jobs (not gainfully employed at the moment), and am wondering what are the "winning" characteristics exhibited by successful employees who always get raises and are not even considered during mass company layoffs. Thanks.

Hi Stan, it's me again! Some of the traits that are valued by employers are: honesty, reliability, motivation, and the ability to communicate well with not only customers but also co-workers. People who get promoted tend to be good at going "the next step" on a project, or people who are willing to generate the idea for the project in the first place and motivate a team to get the job done.

Actually, a simple thing that employers like is a pleasant employee. No one likes people who come in and go on and on about their personal problems, or use their personal lives as an excuse for being late, or for poor job performance. It kind of is like what your kindergarten teacher probably told you: play well with others.

Good question Stan
I would say Team players.
Good workers are great, but everybody has them or they would be out of business (that doesn't mean you don't have to be a good worker).
People that have transferable skills are also looked at. People that can motivate and lead others in getting the job done.
Agreeable employees are also favoured. no one wants to hear what a bad idea something is.

Bosses like workers who are dependable and positive. Just think if you were the boss and needed to know who you could depend upon with confidence... what type of workers would you look to?

Stay out of office politics and take the initiative to get work done and get along with coworkers. Some of the worst mistakes I made in my career included getting too involved personally with coworkers. I think if you work hard (and smart), contribute in your role, act as a leader and walk on the high road, you will be respected and you will get merits. Good luck.
