It is the beginning of the period of Lent, the forty days representing the forty days during which Jesus fasted and was tempted in the wilderness. Lent ends with Easter Day, the greatest feast in the Church's year. Ash Wednesday gets its name from the custom of burning the palm crosses which were handed out to the faithful on Palm Sunday the previous year (people hand them in for this purpose) and using the ash obtained to mark the foreheads of people attending church on Ash Wednesday. The mark is a cross on the forehead symbolizing their baptism and as the mark is applied the priest says the words: "Remember man that thou art dust and unto dust thou shalt return."
