Catcher in the Rye is absolutely one of my favorite books of all time. Of all the novels I was forced to read in high school, Catcher in the Rye was the only one I thoroughly enjoyed and read over and over again, because I found that even though it was written in the 40's, it was still an extremely relevant portrayal of teenage angst and one guy's search for something real in a phony society. If the schools ever ban it, they are nuts, because there is nothing controversial about the book that I can see. True, a lot of serial killers have been known to be obsessed with it, but I really don't see anything in the content that should be cause for its banishment from the school reading list. If anything, they should ban stupid boring books that nobody really likes.

I don`t believe schools are still trying to ban it. I was in the sixth grade in the 50`s and the teacher had to have our parents written consent for us to be able to read it. I found it an excellent book for pre teens.
