I will tell you my experience:
My parents set up visits at several schools i wanted to go to...some we knew things about and some we didn't. For my number 1 and 2 choices, we set up overnight visits. Well...after those overnights at my first 2 choices, i was devastated! I didn't like their social atmospheres at all! Although school isn't about the social aspect, you do need to feel comfortable there and there is no better way to find out then an overnight. The open houses we attended, made me open my eyes to some schools that i wasn't interested in. Some completely turned us off, but there was one that really gave me a wonderful impression. The feelings on campus made me feel wonderful...that is the school i decided on! I scheduled an overnight and it confirmed my feelings and I wound up starting there the following fall.

Of course, this was about 15 yrs ago, but college life is just as important as the information listed in their catalogs, but you can't feel it through that little published handout or those cheesy videos! The only way to know if you will feel comfortable there is to go! Even if you didn't think you liked what you had read or seen, GO...you might be pleasantly surprised!

edit: One of my top 2 choices was interested in me for soccer...i spent the weekend with the team and didn't like them at all!!! This is what completely turned me off!! They were a bunch of, well...i didn't feel comfortable with them! The school i picked didn't even have a soccer team, so i wound up not playing at school, but i still played elsewhere. Luckily, i wasn't financially dependent on my playing in college and i was more interested in my education and felt that playing a sport would make my academics much harder...so this was a good choice for me.

The nice thing about visiting most colleges is that it is usually free to visit and stay over night, and they provide meals and activities for free. Plus, sometimes visiting can make all the difference in whether or not you attend. A beautiful campus, a hilly campus, a worn down campus, a campus with many resources, etc., can all affect whether or not you will attend. Unless visiting is going to put some kind of uneccessary strain on you right now (such as traveling hundreds of miles) I would say visit as many as you are planning to apply to.

You'll never know what a visit can tell you, good or bad, so if the school is appealing enough to apply to, I would visit. Your opinion about it coul change either way and you don't want to find out a) after you've spent the money to go there or b) what you missed out on
