I love turtles. I have owned different types of turtles through my entire life. I was just recently at a flea market, and saw a russian tortise for sale, it was a baby. Only a couple months old. But it was priced at like $200!! I would love to buy a russian tortise, but 200 bucks seems like a lot. What is a good price of those type of turtles? I've never paid more than 60 dollars for a turtle. And since then, I haven't been able to find any place that has them, epsecially that young. Any ideas of how I can locate someone that sells them? I am located in Dayton, Ohio. Thanks!

1. Russian tortoises (and other tortoises) make OK pets IF you can offer them the large spaces they need, and offer the right temps and humidity.

2. $200 is WAY too much for a Russian in most places. For good on-line dealers, try the 'Classified Listings' in the forum at http://www.turtleforum.com Whenever possible, however, try to buy an animal you can see!

One GREAT source for reptiles is a reptile show or expo. Here is a list of upcoming events: http://www.kingsnake.com/events.html There is a big one coming up in Columbus, and another in Cleveland. I'm jealous- our area only gets a couple small shows a year!

$50 is about the cheapest I have ever seen a Russian- they tend to be rather cheap and run about $75 most of the time. At a show you can often get them or other species cheaper.

3. Try this article before you buy anything: http://www.austinsturtlepage.com/Articles/firstlandturtle.htm

I agree with their recommendations of 'first land turtles', with one minor exception. They suggest Eastern or Three-toed box turtles and Hermann's, Greek or Russian tortoises. I would definitely agree with all of this, but I don't think Russians are as easy as the rest of them.

Petsmart carries Russian tortoises for about $80. Your local humane society might have tortoises. I like Russian tortoises too. They are cool pets so I have heard. Sorry about your box tortoise! Russian tortoises are going to cost you about $200 by time you buy the food, tank, heat lamp , soil, water bowl, log or something to climb on or over, etc. I have heard that tortoises are simple and if you put a log in almost the middle of the tank, they will go around it and be like "omg look at this , its a new world!" lol. I love turtles. Good luck. Also check into breeders.

I have a russian tortoise. Funny story about him though..he cost $25. A friend gave me a box turtle for my birthday about 6 years ago. The next day it was dead. I took it back to the store and they told me to pick another one. I chose the one I have now and it was an even swap. I found out later he was a russian tortoise.

Anyhoo...have you looked up breeders or tortoise rescues online?

LLLReptile.com sells them for 49.99, ReptileDepot.com sells them for 39.99. I have been pleased with Reptile Depot's service and FedEx's. They have been good to me in the past. I have not delt with LLLReptile but I have heard they are very good. Both are located in Cali...

Otherwise, local stores will sell them anywhere from 80-150$ and online auctions sell for up to 350$! Crazy. My females came from Reptile Depot and I paid 119$ for them. They're little tanks and eat like crazy! Well, have fun searching. Shop around for sure. Nothin like realizing you could have bought an animal for 30$ cheaper after the fact, lol

No. Tortoises are no longer rather stepped forward adequate to narrate "play" with "entertainment" i won't be in a position to even think of of the form you may play with them? surprisingly lots the only time you may take care of then is once you're moving them from element A to show B, or once you will clean off the poop from their shell. you won't be in a position to like play fetch with them or tickle them or something? in case you attempt to "play" with it, it is going to in all probability think of you are trying to attack it and cover in that is shell.
