To protect them, naturally. The whole concept of "patriarchy" is one of providing security for those who are thought to not be able to do it themselves. This idea is still alive when you see women demanding "chivalry" from men (i.e., buying them shiny objects) and trying to opt out of signing up for social service. Women in those days were quite happy to be the matron of the household if it meant they weren't torn apart by a mortar shell or hacking their coal-blackened lungs up.

Nowadays, unfortunately, it's "have your cake and eat it too" time. Most women don't REALLY want to be treated as equals. What was understood back then, and what has been forgotten now, is that true equality means equal RESPONSIBILITY on top of equal rights. Maybe one of these days, the spoiled brats that pass for women in the western world will step up to the plate on this one. There are a few intelligent women who believe in true equality who have, but sadly these are rare.

Rights are not given. They are taken.

Women have not been able to take rights in the past b/c of higher birthrates and lower survival rates for mothers. High birth rates were necessary b/c of frequent war and the need for warriors. With the extensive introduction of effective birth control in the 1960s and changes in the labour force during and after WWII, western women have been in a position to take some rights. However, this civilization may soon be overwhelmed by other cultures whose high birth rates have produced and are producing large populations.

When civilization starts men seen women are struggling with the babies right from the birth and upto a stage the baby grow.

So, they decided to roam for their family making the women to take care of the family. Since men interacted with each other they made rules such that men for earning and women for taking care of the family

Men wanted their women to be cool and free at home. Everyone wanted their women to be at home peacefully not to bother about the world. This is actually a security and support for the women.

actually there was ebb and flow as civilizations came and went, the status of women went up or down. it was the last 500 years the status of women went through the struggle it has and that was as the centralization of government, military power, banking, it was though essential to have a top to bottom social order and the way was to have as few persons as possible controlling the wealth, power, so, women were merely another figment of the class system we are still stuck with! also the leaders ofchristianity and islam being ignorant of women decided second class treatment as way of controlling what they didnt understand about themselves

If feminism extremely needed peace, it would have prevailed via now. in case you extremely need to speak peace between adult adult males & women individuals, I say collect everyone in a huge circle and merely get intense. No seriosly that could in all probability be extra effective than following any political circulate "for peace"

There were many of reasons. One was that male society did not want to believe that women could be head of the house and/or should be subservient to them. In fact, many women believed that as well. In the past, many cultures, religions, and civilizations felt it was OK for women to be 2nd class citizens. It centuries before that belief was even seriously challenged. Once women began to work outside of the home and educate themselves, they began to realize that they could achieve the same goals as men could. Eventually men began to realize that and accept it too. However, you can still see evidence of (some) women not being treated equally today. Look at some of the 3rd world nations, or non Christian based religions and certain regions within our own borders to see evidence of women still being treated as 2nd class citizens.

Unfortunately we were subject to a genetic disadvantage...we were the physically weaker gender. This was perpetuated through thousands of years of civilization....

Until..

We figured out we were a hell of a lot smarter...lol. Give it another ten thousand years or so and if 'man' doesn't blow the planet to smithereens you may just see some female dominated societies.

Why were women Given Lesser Rights in Past?

1) In the distant past women were considered merely as a tool for the happiness of men and for bearing children for procreation and for maintaining continuation of human species in this planet earth. Also ,women were considered as best to serve for the interests of men ,carrying out the house hold chores ,including cooking ,cleaning, washing etc apart from ensuring physical comforts and happiness of men.
On the contrary, men were considered as superior to women , created with more muscle power than women to provide safety and security to women in the male dominated society.
2) Fidelity /virginity was considered applicable only to women and not for men. It was considered more important to women than their life. Male was considered the supreme partner for the act of sex between male and female partners for the sole happiness of male partner. Monogamy was considered applicable only to women and hence women were not allowed to choose a male partner ,even after they lost their male partners by death or by any other cause. After the loss of their male partner ,women were not allowed to enjoy even basic amenities of good food ,clothing and shelter and they were even forced to die once they lose their partners. They were considered inauspicious, unlucky during family functions and festivals in temples.
3) Women were kept out of any productive work/service outside home ,and hence they had to depend upon men for economic, social and financial supports, so that they are under the control of men ,for anything and everything including decision making on petty and small issues affecting the family. Economic freedom was denied to women so that they are always under the control of men.
4)Even basic education was denied to women so that they are totally ignorant of the happenings around and remain only as watch dogs for the family.
5) Because of the monthly mensural cycles of women caused by biological changes in their bodies, women were considered impure and sinners even for God ,as they were not allowed to enter the temples of God and even in their own home with only restricted movements for a minimum of three to four days in a month during their period of mensural cycle.
6) As women were kept illiterate, they were not permitted access to any holy scriptures ,inorder to maintain male supremacy over women.
