Japanese Animation, like the previous answer.
The styles and topics vary, along with the intended audiences. They can range from funny to highly violent or pornographic (hentai). Unlike american animation (cartoons) it's not odd to see nudity and hear swearing while watching anime.

It's Japanese inspired Anime not like American Animation like Superman but like Dragonball Z. The art is way different with more details and usually it's made for a more older audience.

Anime is a form of animation that originates in Japan. It differs from american animation in that, unlike many American animations, anime has episode and series deveopment. Another unique feature is the highly stylized and detailed graphics used, contributing to a much more defined series. Anime has a broader range of use as well. with as many genres as live action shows. You can have comedy, sci fi, drama, horror, fanasty, mystery, hentai (shows that are pornographic in nature), it runs the gamut. American animation, in essance, lack in diversity, mostly because of the developed stereotype that animation should always be child- oriented. This stereotype simply does not exist in Japan. If you have never seen anime before, you should certainly check it out. while there are many options out there, and many downloads available, if you are just starting out, you may want to check out a show on Adult Swim on Cartoon Network, such as Fullmetal Alchemist. a bit of a warning though, unlike American animated shows, anime is usually NOT episodic, so check it out in the beginning of the series or you will be lost on the plot. If that is impossible, then you can usually find series summaries online, as well as episode summaries to bring you up to speed. I hope this answer has helped to catch your interest, and that you take the chance to try a show! I wish you the best of luck!

Anime is the Japanese word for cartoons, while stateside and possibly in other countries it has come to refer to Japanese cartoons, it actually covers all cartoons in Japan. So in Japan you wouldn't say "what anime would you recommend" to somebody, as they would think of all cartoons they have access to, like anything Disney

anime is cartoons from japan. some anime are pokemon, yugioh, and naruto. you can usually tell by the way they have their eyes and stuff. also anime is more violent than american cartoons (reason why i watch anime at all) and they usually do stuff like stabbing people with oversized swords, and blowing people's heads off with oversized guns.
