If it is a Maintenance Indicator Light (MIL), it's time for an oil change. If you want to change the oil yourself, you can and turn the light out. Check your OWNERS MANUAL. It will tell you how to turn the light off. In a lot of cars you can turn the light out by turning the ignition switch to ON, not start, press the gas peddle to the floor 3 times. The MIL light will flash then go out. Just to make sure CHECK THE OWNERS MANUAL.

This happened in my Honda and I called the dealer. It was for routine maintance like an oli change, fluid checks, tire roation and such. It did not require anything that could not be done at Walmart but the Honda dealers cost to do the routine maintance was approximately $200. Walmart was $30.. Needless to say I went to Walmart and then to the Honda dealer where they turned out the light.

if it is a newer car... the lights will come on every 30k miles i think it is just to say you need to do some maintenace on the car.
you dont have to goto the dealer to have that fixed any repair shop can do the maint. and turn the light off as long as they have the computer
if it is a check engine light,.,
that is different you should have both checked out..
