That is a debate that will last forever, never really being answered. History is told from the point of view of whoever wrote it down. Often it is exagerated or tainted by the opinions and viewpoints of those that tell it. Unfortunately we have to use common sense when looking at history, most of it is truth but there is alot of exageration and bias in History.

Do you believe its true that the USA won its independence, waging a war against England ? or maybe you might think USA waged a war against Mongolia or Luxembourg, could be?
Do you believe that World War II was won by the "Allies" or maybe you think that the final victor was Germany, Japan, and Italy and that currently we are living in an Axis governed world?
Of course history is basically true. And of course also there are passages in history in which certain details have been manipulated to favor one or other interested party or country.
Inequivocally, the official results of the assassination of JFK have been grossly distorted.
Nevertheless the great majority of the people know this although the official veil over the matter.
These cases of historical distortions do not disqualify history as a whole.

History books are written by the winners. Therefore they would be biased towards the views of those winners.
And truth is always subjective. Each of us as individuals have perceptions of what is continually happening around us. We do not always see the same events in the same way because of the way we perceive things. Our truths are always coloured by the way we think.
To ask the question "Is history really true?" will get you as many different answers as there are people that lived that particular history. So, is history really true?....Yes...for that person who wrote that history, it was true. For others who saw the same events from a different perspective...NO.

Geeez. LARGE question.
Generally, I think the basic data that we can gather from sources must be questioned at all times. No historian was completely impartial, and we always have to look at a specific issue from as many angles as possibly to get a close picture of what really happened. Where the data is insufficient, we must draw conclusions - conclusions which might, in the long run, turn out to be rubbish. There is no other way, though, to find out what happened in the past. And we need history to comprehend how today's society evolved and what developments were there before.
A very, very brief and insufficient answer, I know, but you could write whole libraries about this question, really!

Napolean had a saying about history:
"History is but a fable agreed upon"
To further discuss this....let's use the Civil War.
What was the reasoning behind the Civil War?
If you were schooled in the North....you most likely heard it was because the southerners were using slaves and that was bad....so they fought to free them
If you were schooled in the South....you most likely heard that the Southerners were tired of being overtaxed for thier cotton....which was the main crop. So they decided to seceed from the US
Who fired the first shot?.....southerners
I tend to bend toward the southern view....and I'm a Yankee

'' history is written by teh victorers ''.
had the nazi's won world war 2, wed mostlikely know nothing about that jew ever existed.
a lot of facts have been twisted or even changed in history to make nations, races or singular people come out better.
most of history is very likely to be true. especially the large global view you get in school. it would be very hard to hoax something as big as the world wars, of napolean's conquest of europe.

Huh? Do I "thinks" it? Well, Bubba (just making assumptions) here is a little thought for you to ponder whilst whittling.
History is true--everything that ever really happened is true!
It is our recollection and interpretation that is often apocryphal--look it up.
I would love to know what made you post this question and what you're really after?

Define truth.
History is true from some people's perspective and false from other perspectives.
If truth is subjective then so is history.
