I am trying to find a part for a friend in South America and every place I call asks me for the VIN number. He says there is nothing on the windshield or dash board. Where to look? Do all cars made or assembled in other countries have VIN as well?

1. ALL cars in the world AUTOMOTIVE TRADE have VIN numbers.
2. ALL VIN numbers are now 17 digits since 1881.
3. Prior to that they might be as few as 6 like a 1949 Dodge PU I had.
Also the VIN Number is located MANY MANY places on each Vehicle not just the VIN plate on the dash and door pillar or firewall that you see.
4. Contrary to some peoples thoughts a VIN number IS USED AT ALL TIMES CONCERNING A VEHICLES REGISTRATION AND OR INSURANCE! If you want to drive it in most countries of the world and ALWAYS IN THE GOOD OLD USA!

All modern cars made have a VIN but not all are 17 digits long. In the 1950's manufactures in the USA started to stamp ID numbers on their cars as they were produced. In the early 1980's the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration NHTSA set out that cars sold in the USA must have a 17 digit VIN and what the positions stand for. Since the USA was the largest importer of cars most companies started to put 17 digit VIN numbers on their cars...This has, since the mid 1980's, become the international standard.

Sometimes a vehicle is stolen and the VIN is removed or modified to hide it's identity. When these cars are recovered, and sold by the police, there is a secondary VIN that is normally less then 17 numbers issued and riveted to a door jam.

The absolutely free reverse vin check sites generally provide fake information. To get real information, money will have to be paid. The free searches provide fake information so they can get your email address to send spam.

Stay away from shady reverse vin check sites, most likely you won't get any information after you make the payment. Not to mention you won't get a report and you won't get an answer if you try to call for a refund. Stick with a reputable reverse vin check site like http://www.reversevincheck.net that has been around since 1995.

I doubt all the cars in the world have them. Even in the US, vin numbers weren't always used.
