You are in for a great time! I hate that first check up (I have three boys) and you have waited so long to go...what is the hold up? Proper first checkups include all the fun internal stuff (pap, uterine exam, and the heart beat...because you are so far along) then you are going to get measured (to see how big the uterus is) and blood pressure. You will be weighed and if your doctor is a good one you will have to pee in a cup (come prepared!) this checks all the stuff in the urine for extras (like if you are missing vitamins or have too much!) There may be an appointment for an ultrasound as you have passed the 19 week mark which is where the doctor likes you to be...this checks to make sure that the baby is developing right (the skull is fully formed, the kidneys and heart need to be developed and the placenta needs to be in the right place...etc) There is also the great added factor of blood tests. You may have to go for the blood sugar one as well. This one is where you have to drink a huge glass of nasty tasting liquid and then waite an hour and then they test to see how much is in the blood to see if you have the pregnancy diabetes...
Hopefully your doctor is responsible and does all these tests...you should have gone long ago. You are lucky that you are going now though...it will be a huge check up but all the others will be way less...
just a measure, pee in a cup, blood pressure, and weigh in, with a uterus measure...that is about it for a regular check up. It is way less than what you will have on Friday...
Good luck. I am totally loving being a Mom...

I don't understand why you're so far along and just now going to the doctor. I'm not really sure what all they will do, seeing as how most people go within the first 2 months. At a normal first appointment, they confirm the pregnancy, do an ultrasound, a pap smear, a STD check, and draw blood. They will also ask a lot of questions about your sexual history, periods, and past pregnancies.

Wow, five months and this is your first prenatal visit? Well, I won't judge because it is good that you are going. Most first visits are done around 6 weeks. During the visit, weight, blood pressure and urine are checked. A pap and pelvic exam are done to test for syphilis and gonorrhea. Blood will be drawn for routine tests. I also had a TB test at mine, which is something fairly new the nurse told me.
Since you are much further along, they will also measure your belly, check the heartbeat with the Doppler and you will most likely have an ultrasound as well. Most women have their first ultrasound at 20 weeks.
Best wishes for a healthy pregnancy and baby.

You're having your first check up at 5 months! That's horrible! You missed out on so many important blood tests already!
Expect a sonogram, lots of blood tests, a pap smear, and a tummy check.

They will ask you a bunch of ?'s about your family history and thigns like that. They will weigh you,you will have to get blood work, you will get a papsmear and they will do a breast exam. You will probley get a sonogram seeing as how you are 5 months that is when they usually give them. Good luck and Congrats

While I don't think you should wait to see your doctor when you're pregnant, with our first son I had to wait about 3 months because of insurance reasons to see my OB. With that being said, at my first appointment they drew a LOT of blood, did a pelvic exam, scheduled an ultrasound, and asked a ton of questions about my medical past. They also explained what would happen during the pregnancy and asked what kind of birth I had in mind (natural/epidural..etc...)
Good Luck!
