Technology is both a boon and a bane to work-life balance.
On the one hand, the convenience of being able to have your office "anywhere" with laptops, smartphones etc give you freedom to structure your work flexibly.
On the other hand, the pervasive nature of communications technology can mean you are "always at work".
Having worked in Silicon valley in engineering management for 20 years I can tell you that the difference is in how you set limits, goals, and apply technology to meet them.

Technology or more precisely IT has, whether you like it or not, revolutionalized our everyday lives. From brushing your teeth to typing your letter, technology has a part to play. The issue of advantages or disadvantages does not matter -- what matters is how to use technology. Some use it to harm others, some use it to bless others. So long as it helps us live through life a little bit easier, to me it is all very helpful.
