I categorize them in four ways, though I rarely know who is which...
Assholes
Idiots
Lunatics
People with a serious emergency
These people always get the same treatment from me... if they ride my ***, I *slow down.* If you want to drive aggressively, I will not enable you by speeding up or getting out of your way; I will slow you down. If you back off by a few car lengths, so as not to endanger me and other innocent people, then I'll speed back up again. I encourage others to do the same, and take back our roads from assholes, idiots, and lunatics.
Many of us need to be someplace in a hurry. I've been there MANY times. But I refuse to ride someone's behind, no matter what the situation is. I am not more important than you, and dammit, you are not more important than me -- that's my attitude.
These people are a menace to our roads, and to our very peace of mind. I can't recall how driving used to feel, many years ago, when some ****-for-brains thug in an SUV (more often than not) wasn't constantly in my trunk, whether I was driving 55 or 70.
There is NO speed which will satisfy them. If the speed limit were 95, they'd be going 110. It has to stop somewhere, and if you're tailgating ME, that's one place it stops.
I've often wished I had rear-firing headlights for creeps like that.
By the way, boonietech, nobody said anything about driving like a granny in the left lane. I don't like that either, but there IS a middle ground. Since you didn't answer the question -- a very reasonable one -- you're probably one of the types I mentioned. Move over and stay in the slow lane is exactly what I do, often. But there are still tailgaters there -- constantly. And *frequently* they're too f'ing stupid to go around.
My question is, "Where are the police?!" They could -- and should -- clean up, both financially and road-wise by ticketing these people with much greater frequency than I see.

What kind of mentality does it take for a person to drive like a granny in the left lane. Move over and stay in the slow lane and you won't have that problem.
