Ok I might be looking for far fetched excuses, but surely 'dad' comes from 'dead' and 'mum' really means 'mame'?

No. Dad does not come from dead and mum doesn't mean mame (think that should be maim). Perhaps you need a better dictionary that will give you proper etymology. By the way, how are your parents? Well, I hope?
