Here's the situation: my laptop won't boot and can't be fixed by checkdisk. But, when I use a boot disk to load DOS, it can still read most of the drive. So, I want to move my data off. I own the laptop, and can take it apart or remove pieces at will (and have). I do not own a desktop, though I do have access to one, so I'd preffer any sollution be "non-invasive" on the desktop end (hence the 2.5 HDD adaptor is out). Does anybody know of a way I can pull this off?

Go buy a USB data transfer cable, that should suffice.

You can purchase what is called a "transfer case". You remove the hard drive from the laptop and plug it into the connector inside the case. The case then has a USB connector that plugs into the back of your desktop. You can then access the files on the laptop drive. Should run you around $30-40.

You can try purchasing a "crossover cable' and hook the two systems together to access the laptop drive or you can purchase a USB hard drive case for laptop drives (seen them as low as thirty bucks) and by removing the HDD from the laptop sliding it into the case you can access the drive via a USB port.

You could mount the hard drive into an external USB drive caddy (you will need to an adapter so it will fit) then plug it into a USB port on the desktop. It will see it as a removeable device and you could copy off your data. The external drive caddies are about $25.

There are USB HDD Enclosures that enable your laptop HDD to be used as a USB disk drive. Choose one to enclose your laptop hdd and get a usb cable to connect via desktop USB port. That should work!
