xbox 360,why wont it let me play the ranked games?

Do you have the gold subscription? If you don't, then you can't play.
If you're using a guest pass, then no ranked games for you.

could it be that you are banned? or your 360 is messed up?

usually, it won't let if if you don't have xbox live, other than that, it's probably messed up?
