A special hammer fitting is used to drive the freeze plugs home. They routinely do this. If you feel brave and are able to get the old one out clean the rust away properly. Do you have adequate clearance to drive a new plug in using a shallow well socket? Go for it. Ask if there is any kind of sealer to go on the outside of the plug.

I would take it to a mechanic and have them figure out why it's getting hot. I think you are treating the symptoms, and not the cause. If you don't figure out the cause, you will continue to have problems like this.

if you can get to it, you should do it yourself. you can buy freeze plugs that go in, and then tighten from the outside.
