My husband is a classroom teacher and last fall was required to do a curiculum on reptiles. He was sent 8 green anoles, all males. The class took care of them and studied them for several weeks. The project is now over. It was suggested in the project literature that he send the anoles home with kids that got permission from parents. These were 4th graders. The care of these lizards is quite complex and I had him bring them home instead, fearing what would happen to them. I have read that these common green anoles are native to the eastern Carolinas. Is this true? I will be going to Charleston SC next week on a business trip and had the idea to take the anoles there and release them in a remote area. Thanks for your info and opinion of this idea.

Anolis carolininsis (spelling might not be spot on, but you get the idea) They'll do fine anywhere in the southeast U.S., and it probably won't matter if it's a remote area or not. If it weren't for the Cuban Anoles running around here in Florida, there'd be a whole lot more Greens here, but even with numbers lower than what they used to be, they're all over my yard and everywhere else. Just make sure you're not letting them out in low temps. They're used to being captive and it will take them a while to get used to their new environment and find somewhere sheltered to get out of cold weather. They should be fine otherwise.

They are native to the area. I'm not sure about releasing them but generally anoles that are sold in stores are taken from the wild anyway so chances are they were once wild.
