I have tried items such as Rescue Remedy and they don't work. I realize that it takes time to train a dog, and that is fine. However, I live in an apt with a neighbor who is quick to complain, so I really need something that is just going make her sleep or rest when I leave for work.

She's a rescue, sounds like seperation anxiety to me. Try not confining her to a small space. For example, we put our dogs in the kitchen with baby gates. This way, they are confined and can't get into trouble, but they don't bark to get out like they do in their kennel. If she shows any behavior such as chewing on things, destroying things when you leave, you'll need some serious dedication. We had a dog with severe seperation anxiety and we had to slowing integrate leaving to her. Sometimes we'd just put our coats on for a second... then come back and get her... go out side for 5 minutes.. come back. You're basically training her that you ARE going to come back for her, unlike her previous owners.

Odds are she probably only barks for a few seconds and then stops when you are gone. Mine whine sometimes when I leave, but if you go back in 2 minutes, I bet she's quiet. If not, try some of those tactics above. They work quicker than you think, dogs are extremely intelligent, which is why she's probably harboring some fear from her past.

has the neighbor complained yet about the dog barking? the reason i ask is...i also have a rescue dog who barks when i leave. i've had him for over 3 years and he still does it (i think maybe rescue dogs are needier than other dogs?). but i know for a fact that it only lasts about 2 minutes. when he realizes i'm gone, he curls up into a ball and sleeps until i return. so maybe your fido quits after a few minutes. if that's the case (here's hoping so), tell your carnky neighbor to get over herself.

give her lots of toys and treats to chew on. she probably has seperation anxiety since she is a rescue dog. she may also hav abandonment issues for that same reason. you may even have to get someone to stay with her during the time that you are gone. our older dog has seperation anxiety and he has chewed his way out of the house a couple of times after being left alone for even a half an hour.

There are shock collars that you can get for them when they bark. It won't hurt her, it will just give her a small jolt when she barks eventually it will hit her and she'll realize this only does it when I bark, so maybe I shouldn't do it. I assure you it will not hurt her, and it normally works pretty fast.
