Microsoft Word or
Word Pad

Either Microsoft Word or Open Office Writer will open a file with the .doc format.

I'm sure there are other programs as well but these are the two I have used.

Some .doc files can be opened in Wordpad (a program that comes with Windows), but normally you need the full version of Microsoft Word to open and create .doc files.

You should be able to open a .doc file with either Microsoft Word or with Wordpad. If you happen to have Wordperfect or similar products, most of them will work with .doc files too.

If the file is coming from an unknown source, be SURE to scan it with your anti-virus software BEFORE you open it!

Microsoft word will open that file. It is true that Wordpad can open some .doc files but a lot of times the formatting becomes very messy. If you don't have word and just need to open the file to view or print, Microsoft makes a free viewer program that you can download from their website.

Microsoft Word and Open Office will both open the file. Open Office is a free download, so you might want to Google it.

*.Doc is well known to be a MS Office extension, opening with there WinWord application, shortened to just "MS Word". If you don't have this, you can download OpenOffice or StarOffice, which are free, and these will open nearly all versions of MS Word ".Doc" files, including most other office files.
