I have a 1991 Chevy Z71, and it acts like neutral in any gear on both the transmission and transfer case. When I begin to switch the transfer case into a gear while the tansmission is in gear it makes a grinding sound until you hold it between the gears for a while or until you put it fully in gear. I think that it wouldn't make a grinding sound if the transmission wasn't spinning so that could mean it's the transfer case. On the other hand, it could be that the transmission is only spinning because it has no load and when you put the transfer case in gear that sound is the sound of the transfer case stopping the transmission. What do you think? (please only answer if you're fairly sure)
Thanks

Oh the good old days of the 241 t/case, made a small fortune rebuilding them. the problem is the synchro in the t/case, either the snap ring that holds the output shaft in place broke.( very common) that will sometimes damage the synchro.
Or the spring retainer on the synchro dislodged, sometimes they can be put back together if no damage.
Quick inspection for the snap ring .. remove drive shaft, grab the output shaft that's coming out of the t/case with a pair of channel lock pliers, attempt to move the shaft in & out if you have movement then your snap ring broke ...you might get away with changing the snap ring only (very easy to do) you don't have to remove the t/case, just remove the 4 bolts that hold the tail section, and remove it , pull back on the shaft ( towards rear-end)
you'll see the groove for the snap ring. install snap ring, reassemble.
good luck

Look under the truck idling in gear, after putting parking brake on to see if the driveshaft is turning(that would mean rear diff problem). If it does not turn shaft, the T case could be the problem, because you said all that grinding and what not was happening when you put case in gear from nuetral indicating the output shaft of trans is driving the input of T case..

Shift trans to neutral. put transfer case in 4 low, with out motor running if truck will not move when you put the trans in drive, then the trans has failed.

Sounds like the trans. Take your Z71 to the dealer or trans shop for a free estimate to find out for sure.
