. . . when/if they ask for the money back, will I have to pay it back as a lump sum??? Also, what are the odds of them not asking for it at all???

I think maybe it depends what country you're in. Some Answerers have posted that they can simply withdraw it back from your account, and I don't want to say that they're wrong, but in the UK they definitely CANNOT do this, so maybe these people are talking about in the US.

The reason why I know is because we had a similar situation in my company. There was another girl in the office who had a very similar name to me - the first name was the same, and the last name was only one letter difference. So sometimes she got my pay as well as her own, and she got paid for the month after she left.

They cannot just take it back, and they cannot ask for it back in a lump sum. They can (and will), however, ask for it back in instalments - I am not quite sure what the terms and conditions relating to this are. So if I were you, I would make sure you have it ready to give back - what I mean is, if you want to go and have a few extra beers with the money then cool, but don't go blowing it stupidly.

It's up to you whether you wait for them to notice or whether you call them and tell them. But they will notice in the end, so if I were you I think I'd probably just call them up and deal with it.

If you are getting paid through direct deposit, they will take all of the money back when they discover the error. And they will discover the error. It's just a matter of time.

If I was in your situation, I would contact your former employer immediately and explain the situation. Use whatever excuse you can come up with for not notifying them of the error earlier. If you left the company on good terms, you may be able to work out an installment plan. If not, they'll take it in a lump sum.

This is serious, and they probably won't be very happy that you didn't contact them immediately when you realized you were still getting a paycheck. The best thing to do, in my opinion, is to call them TODAY and apologize, play dumb, whatever you have to do. But you need to stop those checks and try to work out a payment plan.

When they do find out, and I stress when-
I guarantee they will want all their money back.

If you enrolled in direct deposit with them they probably had a caveat in your agreement to automatically withdraw any amounts given to you by accident. They can go directly to your bank and remove the funds without even telling you.

If you don't say anything you run the risk of legal proceedings. They will not care about your "I didn't think I had to tell anyone" excuse. In the eyes of the company and a judge interceeding with the company to recover the funds it will be viewed as stealing.

I highly suggest you come clean before the dollar amount keeps growing.

you may grant to pay it back at a cost you are able to arise with the money for. definite they made a mistake, yet you have been conscious that it replaced right into a mistake, and subsequently have not have been given a leg to stand on. the only situation you're able to do is eat humble pie and are available to three association. otherwise it's going to get dragged throught the courts and you will finally end up paying expenditures for it on suitable.

they will ask eventually

but there is nothing to stop you putting it into a savings account until then and creaming off the interest

and have you thought how this is going to affect your tax, because the tax office could make you pay as basic rate and take all 22% on everything you earn from current job.

More than likely this will be noticed. If you have not gotten another job you are piling on top of all your problems. If you have another job I hope you save well. Some one must be filling out a time sheet for you or punching a time card. Of course it can be part of your severence package.

unless you aquired all of your vacation, sick and paid days then I would go to the employeer and tell them they are still paying you.. They might and probably will ask for it back or HOPEFULLY say keep it.

Isn't that stealing and not alerting your previous employer and giving the money back to them?

soemthing like that happeend to me. it was direct deposit, so they just took it right back out of the account without ever saying anyhting to me. im sure soemone will eventually notice and you will probably have to pay it all back at once. dont spend it. if you dont pay it back they can prosecute.
