They come and go, to different degrees, during the night, linked to REM patterns and levels of consciousness. Of course, when you've finally awoken, your body has shot an awful lot of electrical/chemical changes through itself. No wonder this massive surge causes a hard-on.

Needing a pee is coincidental, after hours asleep.

With me, throughout much of my adult life, there does seem to be a hardening feeling when it is time to get up in morning, and this affects me when in bed alone as much as when sharing it with another. But it is not necessarily true that the hardening will be most intense at this time. it can equally happen during the day at work. Everybody is different. Some guys have sex on their mind predominantly others only sometimes, others rarely and time this tends to happen also varies from bloke to bloke.
Also the thoughts that turn people on hardest vary from person to person, and in some case are not always about having sex with somebody else, and may be deviantly triggered.

I heard that its something to do with the chemicals released in your body that make you wake up - they're meant to just affect you that way. When you wake up naturally you probably wake up errect because of these. While un-naturally it might take a couple of minutes to come up due to your sleep cycle being interrupted. Either way its about the chemicals released, from what I gather. It doesn't seem to be anything to do with sex drive or arousal.

Its all to do with sleeping patterns, as your asleep, your body goes into a slow-down and your heart-rate blood pressure falls down, but during REM sleep, (thats when your dreaming), and just before you wake up, you body gears up for activities, (non-sexual i hasten to add), this is a result of release of hormones, such as increased adrenaline and dopamine - this causes increased heart rate, and constriction of blood vessels - hence the erection :)
its medically proven my friend and all very natural, so no need to worry

I usually get a good feeling of being warm and loved a little before I need to get up. I may have has some sexual subconcious thoughts, but I can't imagine that happening all of the time.
