Turn your old fish tank into a Terrarium. A glass-enclosed landscape, or miniature habitat for very tiny critters. Go to Yahoo Search and you will find a ton of fascinating stuff about how to make and maintain a Terrarium. I had one years ago and loved it. I had to give it away when I started travelling a lot. They can be a great talking point when friends come to the house, fun for kids to get involved in building and maintaining, and a unique little bit of home decor all at the same time. I think you'd enjoy it.

Depending on the age of the child, a bearded dragon is a great lizard. Someone said a Chameleons, and I agree, but Bearded Dragons are cheaper and much easier to take care of. If you don't like reptiles, what about a hamster. They are very good with kids. If you dont want a live animal how about layering different colors of sand in the tank. I dont know how big the tank is but i did that when i was a kid to an old 10 gallon tank. Good luck.

Stelly has the right idea- make it into a terrarium. Perhaps you could try some carniverous plants like the venus flytrap and pitcher plants. Kids always get a kick out of them, and they help reduce insect pest population, too! They might also enjoy turning it into an herb garden.

u can grow small flowering plants or bonsai even. this will help children understand and get a lateral view of the soil, roots and the plant. And also see how water gets absorbed when poured from the top.
