you might sell it or donate it to your child's class room if your child is in school.

You and your child go out and pick out some plants your child and you would like to have in a terrarium.
Make a atmosphere for the plants so you and your child/children can watch the plant/s grow and they can see the wonder of plant life. One can even put seeds in there and the children can watch how a plant grows from seeds. If you have a top to the fish tank even better, but if not this is fine too.
You can even put seeds in there of something edible?
Maybe a plant that flowers, African violet or some other plant that has pretty flowers?
Depending how old your children our of course we do not want the kids thinking they can eat all plants. So education will have to come into play here too :0)

Turn your old fish tank into a Terrarium. A glass-enclosed landscape, or miniature habitat for very tiny critters. Go to Yahoo Search and you will find a ton of fascinating stuff about how to make and maintain a Terrarium. I had one years ago and loved it. I had to give it away when I started travelling a lot. They can be a great talking point when friends come to the house, fun for kids to get involved in building and maintaining, and a unique little bit of home decor all at the same time. I think you'd enjoy it.

Well, if you don't want an animal, you could make a sand exhibit out of it.
Fill it up with different colors of sand. Fill it in at different levels. Make one level like thick and blue, then the next use a different color and make it thinner and so on and so forth. Also, you could put like shells or little gems in the sand to make it decorative. I'm sure that if your doing it for your child they will like it especially if you do it together. :)
Also, if it's a smaller tank you could do this, clean it out really well, and get some of those different coloried candy gummy fish and ocean life, and make some blue jello and put the gummy fish/ocean life in it. Then have some of your childs friends over and let them have a ball and eat the "ocean and fish" of thier choice.

You can build an enclosed ant farm with the edible blue gel specially available.
This gel was invented by Nasa for its space research. It is edible, and translucent, so you can see their movements.
"you can watch ants create 3-D tunnels in the amazing space gel. This miraculous gel is based on a 2003 NASA Space Shuttle experiment to study animal life in space and test how ants successfully tunnel in microgravity. This space-age gel serves as both habitat and nutrition for the ants. Watch as the ants turn a brick of aqua-blue gel into a fascinating colony of tunnels!"
The kids will have an interesting time watching the ants make their tunnels.
Check the links I have listed as source.
Make sure that you open the lid often for fresh air.

Grow some nice flowers in it. All can learn by watching roots grow down (geotropic) while plant grows up (phototropic). Kids get educated without even knowing it!
