i have been online since 1996 and have about 100 friends online from various parts of the country including Alaska(whom I have met) and a couple in the UK. I have seen the pervs and the liars too, but they are such a small percentage and so easy to kick off your email and IM list.
It's okay to be friends online you just be careful about giving out personal info especially if your under 18, and don't 'fall in love' and you will be fine ;-)

I've made friends online, sure. I have a good friend now who lives in Canada, whom I met through online gaming, and very gradually came to a friendship with.
It's possible to connect to real people in real ways using just internet communication. However, don't hide your head in the sand and discount the risk factor of anonymous communication. Take precautions to not reveal personal information, and always remember that you really cannot know the person behind the words.
A great deal of time is required to prove out Internet friendships, whereas real-time face to face contact can cement a friendship in just minutes it seems. Caution pays off in the end.

I Just made a friendship online on MySpace totally by accident. I had typed in some of my musical interests and on my profile page a musical group that I typed in became a link that you could click and it brought me to a list of other people who also liked that particular musical group. I invited them to be a friend on myspace and started reading about them and found that we had lots of things in common. We have been sending emails to each other ever since. We may end up meeting each other sometime now.
I think I've always been reluctant to try anything like online dating. One of my close friends met someone online and they ended up getting married and have a child together now. I think it his hit or miss whether or not you actually meet someone who you will get to know and maintain a friendship with online.
Good Luck!

Online friendships can be fun, however, unless you really know some facts about the other person you will have to rely on that person telling you that they really are a rocket scientist, a brain surgeon, or a night club stripper.

Not at all scared, because I don't have online friends. You have to assume that anyone you meet online is not who they say they are. The 13 year old girl is probably a 52 year old man just trying to get his rocks off. For example, I pretend to be a 32 year old woman, but I am really a 150 year old bridge troll.
