When you say classics, do you mean Greek and Roman or just anything older than 50 years old?

In either case, I recommend Ovid's Metamorphoses (funny!). Otherwise, Salinger, Austen, and Dumas are some of my favorites.

Thomas Mann, Oscar Wilde, Steinbeck, Hemingway, Emile Zola, Bronte sisters and if you can stomach really depressing stuff you should try Dostoyevski & Tolstoy & Charles Dickens.

I love Alexandre Dumas. He was kind of the Stephen King pulp-writer of his day, but his books are always fun. Great blend of action, adventure, humor, plot and characterization. Too bad all the movies based on his work have been duds.

Jane Austen is an outstanding individual to write a checklist on. She based satisfaction and Prejudice loosely on her own life (have you ever seen the flow transforming into Jane?) so as that is something you elect to write approximately on your checklist.
