they should be mandatory. heating water that you are not using is a huge waste of energy. the united states are way far behind the rest of the world in this aspect. get it you will love it. even an electric tankless is more efficient than a standard, and will lower your electric bill, even though they draw more current. the total number of hours that it is on in a month is less, and much better for the environment. 700- 1000 plus labor for a good unit. if you can install yourself, check ebay. while you are at it, change your lightbulbs to cfl and lets end global warming.

Instantaneous gas water heaters cost more than tanks. Tank loses heat up the chimney constantly. Instantaneous water heater heats the water as it goes through it. No standby loss of energy.

The quality of the water that goes for the instantaneous makes a difference in that minerals will plug it up. Well water is bad news.

You can make a tank water heater more efficient if it doesn't sit all day full of hot water. This means that half an hour before you need hot water you have to turn on the tank the heat of the water then when the water is hot, turn heater off on the tank. Ideally, you then used all hot water in the tank and replace it with cold water to sit until the next use.

It is a hassle!

instant hot water heaters are sold through Rinnai, and Bosch just to name a couple. I have installed several of them, and although the initial up-front cost is higher, the payoff is in operating cost.

go to the hardware store. or go online to lowes or home depot. They are way more efficient than electric, heat up way faster and last a lot longer, BUT with gas prices up, they are not as good to run as they once were.
