Okay first you have to solve for the amount of money both spent

lets call the amount 'x'

95-x is the amount Jeremy has left over
64-x the amount Peter has left over

now how can you solve for x
well lets make the two amounts equal each other
how you ask well we know that Jeremy's amount is equal to 3 times Peters final amount so

95-x = 3(64-x)

now just solve for x

95-x = 192 - 3x
95-x-95 (cancels the 95 on this side) = 192 - 3x - 95 (if you do something to one side you do it to the other so it still is equal)

-x = -3x + 97
-x +3x = -3x = 97 + 3x (canceling again and getting x on one side)

2x = 97

2x / 2 = 97 / 2 (get x alone)

x = 48.50

So the boys spent 48.50 at the store

now that we know this we can subtract from the beginning amount

95 - 48.50 = 46.50

64 - 48.50 = 15.50

and we can now check our results to see if it matches the above question

46.50 / 15.50 = 3

Jeremy has 3 times Peter

Hope this helps (I love math and tutored for a while Gr 4 - Gr 11)

J-x=3(p-x)
95-x=3*64-3x
2x=192-95
x=48.5

They both spent an equal amount of money, therefore the difference is kept the same. Since jeremy had 3 times as much, we take
(95 - 64) x 3/2 = 31 x 3/2 = 46.50.
This is jeremy's amount at the end. Subtract this from 95...
95 - 46.50 = 43.50.

That's your answer...

It says they both spent the same amount call it S

So:
95-S= 3 * (64-S)
right one guys money anfter what he spent s three times what the other guy has after spending, the trick to these questions is to convert the "words" to equations.

now you just solve:
95-S= 3 * (64-S)
95-S=192-3S
2S=97
S=48.5

Assume they both spend $ x
Jeremy now has $(95 - x)
Peter has $(64 - x)

95 - x = 3(64 -x)
95 - x = 192 - 3x
3x - x = 192 - 95
2x = 97
x = 48.50
They both spent $48.50
