The back stoop of my house is covered in very thick ice. I have 2 dogs that go in and out. I feel like I can't put salt there because they will lick it up or it will burn there paws. I tried breaking it up with a shovel, but that got me no where. Please help! We slip on it everyday.

They make a salt substitute that works just as good. i know of one that is called safer than salt. These are designed to protect animals/ vegetation/ cement/ and metal corrosion. You should be able to find some at your local Home Depot or Lowes.

Any type of sand, kitty litter, abrasive will work to keep the slipping down, but the dogs can track that in the house on their paws. It isn't a danger to them, just adds cleaning for you.

If you want to remove the ice and a shovel won't work, do you have a digging iron? Whack it a couple of times with that to break the ice, then use the shovel to scrape it off. Another option is to pour boiling water over it to soften it, then scrape with the shovel. This may take more than one try, but it will work.

Sometime during the daytime hours when the sun is out pour some sand on your stairs. Then put a nice thick rug inside your
door to catch the excess sand. In just one day the ice will be almost to a non-skid surface. Please take care and don't trust
that there won't be just one more "icy" spot on your stairs.
Good Luck.

Try Safe Paw Ice Melter. I have not used it, but it is advertised as safe around pets. You may have to search for it in your area.
