the lions hiearchy is to protect against threats in the pride, mainly other lions trying to kill the cubs and take over the pride. they basically don't have time to hunt, if they are in a pride. however, they can hunt, as many young male lions are not in prides thus, have to hunt to live.

The males are the enforcers of the pride........the muscle. They are much bigger and more powerful then the females who are generally quicker, more agile, and among what is mostly they sisters, aunts, mothers etc.......share a strong bond, thus hunt very well together. Basically, the pride males eat first, BECAUSE THEY CAN.

Many of you will find that males actually DO hunt sometimes. They are not the nocturnal hunters like the females, but if they come upon an animal and kill it, they will call the family to the kill with a series of loud anxious calls. The male will often watch the cubs when the girls go hunting at night, which is also a very important role in the lion family.

Actually males do hunt. They hunt when the lionesses are having a rough time taking down something.Males cannot actually hunt hunt they just help when the lions already have it cornered or something. So therefore the male does not have to stay low, ya know. The mane is noticeable so males cannot hunt great.Juvenile males hunt though. The dominate male and any older males don't.The dominate male and the others actually have huge manes and they need to stay fit.So they rest and wait for food.

As several other people have indicated, the males
do hunt. The photographs of the hunt that I have
seen were hunts made at night. Whether this is
the usual time the males hunt I don't know. It is
fairly normal for females of the various kinds of
cats to hunt more than the males do. This is
because most cats are relatively solitary, and the
female has to hunt more to feed her kittens.

They actually do hunt. When the male offspring gets old enough, it is kicked out of its pride, and forced to live on its own. Sometimes several male lion will sometimes form a bachelor group.
So, if the male doesn't hunt, it will starve.

Lions don't hunt because they are, essentially, the figureheads of the Pride. They are there to protect the females from other animals, or lions that may try to become the alpha lion, or, in a lean year, attack the other pride for their food. The lioness is the hunter.

The male lion can't hunt for itself due to its mane.
The mane indeed make the lion look bigger and also it can't hide as well as the females in the grass and becomes conspicuous to prey animals.

If a king rules, does he follow his own orders? Obviously not. He lets his men do it, right? Male lions lead and not hunt.
