It's the difference between personality characteristics and a personality disorder. The Meyers Briggs, Keirsey Temperament Sorter and other personality measures that use the 16 personality types are really meant to measure features of a normal personality. So an INTP might be an introverted, quiet type, who like doing things on their own, but their personality style does not negatively impact their lives in any significant way. In contrast, the term Schizoid refers to a personality disorder. Personality disorders, by definition, are pathological. They cause serious impairments and great difficulties with day-to-day functioning. Schizoid individuals go way beyond being introverted and quiet. They are detached, have a restricted range of emotions and have little desire for close relationships, including sexual relationships. People who are INTP should have no difficulty leading happy, productive, fulfilling lives. People who are schizoid will have great difficulty in doing so.

Actually, I'm an INTP and I know for certain that I don't have schizoid personality disorder. Schizoids tend to be indifferent to praise or criticism, emotionally cold, and uninterested in sexual activity. I definitely don't fit those descriptions!
