You need to look at Olympians for this answer, not at pro money grubbers. What about Andras Balczo of Hungary who holds the record for the most Olympic golds won for running events with his feat of winning three gold medals in the marathon in the 1960, 1968, and 1972 Olympics? I think the 10 Olympic gold medals won by American Raymond Ewry in the high, long, and triple jumps in 1900, 1904, 1906, and 1908 absolutely blow Michael Jordan out of the water. Not to mention that statistically, the efforts of a certain cricket batsman, Sir Donald Bradman of Australia, are so far beyond the average scores in his game, that he is about 100 times better at his sport of cricket than Jordan was at basketball when you compare Jordan to other players in his sport.

Jacobus Franciscus "Jim" Thorpe (Sac and Fox Nation: Wa-Tho-Huk) (May 28, 1887 – March 28, 1953) is considered one of the most versatile athletes in modern sports. He won Olympic gold medals in the pentathlon and decathlon, starred in college and professional football, played Major League Baseball and also had a career in basketball. He subsequently lost his Olympic titles when it was found he had played two seasons of minor league baseball prior to competing in the games (thus violating the amateur status rules). In 1983, thirty years after his death, his medals were restored.

Probably Bo Jackson or Dion Sanders. Bo made the All Star teams in both Major League baseball and the NFL. Dion played in both the Superbowl and the World Series.
