I have been losing my voice now on and off for the past eighteen months. I have been seen by an ent consultant who explained that it was the muscles in my throat and I needed speech therapy to strengthen them up.
As soon as I lose my voice I get ear infections so am off work on anti biotics.( I work for the nhs)
I wondered if the were other methods any one knows of that would help get my voice back as I haven't been able to talk above a whisper for the last 3 weeks, it shows no sign of coming back either.
I have been told that a change of job would be good as I am on the phones alot which doesn't help, but strange as it may seem I like what I do and if there were any homeopathic or other ways to do this I'd like to hear about them.

I am a licensed speech-language pathologist.
While I can't give you any specific exercises to work on without seeing you personally and knowing your medical history, my advice to you would be to try a different speech clinic, if possible. 9 months of therapy time lost is unreasonable for you to have to wait given the nature of your problem. There are some good vocal hygiene strategies that anyone can do which are typically helpful for voice problems due to vocal abuse (i.e., shouting, excessive talking, harsh throat clearing). Some of these would be to limit talking on the phone, make sure you are not talking to people from different rooms in the house, drink 6 to 8 glasses of water a day, avoid caffienated products as these dehydrate the mucus membranes in your body and are harmful to the vocal folds. Make sure you are not pushing your voice to over-compensate for the hoarseness as this can cause even more difficulties with your vocal cords. It sounds like your vocal cords are not meeting and therefore, you have a gap between them from which air is getting through. Hence, you hear a whisper coming from you. There really aren't any homeopathic remedies for this from my profession's standpoint. The voice exercises will help your vocal cords strengthen and eventually meet at midline, thereby improving your vocal quality.
As far as the choking sensation goes, has your ENT been made aware of this? Is the choking in response to eating? Some times for people with vocal fold paralysis, they have difficulty swallowing. If this is the case, a swallowing evaluation would also be indicated. This can also be done by a speech-language pathologist. Good luck!

I understand what you are going through. My son had his first ear infection at 2 months and one every month after that. He was talking saying "mom, dadda, no go and many other owrds" when he got to be about 16 months old he started to slow down his talking and I was scared. I talked with his doctor and she said he was speech delay. I haqd an appointment with the ear, nose doctor with in a week. I got tubes but in and the very next day he stated talking. You know your son the best. If you think he need speech take him or talk to his doctor and ask questions..He will talk when he has some thing to say. I think you shouls go see his doctor and tell him what the problem is. I love my son doctor she is the best and she had kids of her own so she can understand what am going throw.

Ear infections aren't contagious. There's no reason for you to miss work for an ear infection. If you can't speak, I don't see how you could do a phone job, unless you can conduct business through email or something. Good luck with everything.
