I have a PC running XP Professional with a wireless network card and a shared printer connected to it. If I log onto the PC the printer is available on my wireless network.

If I turn my PC & printer on, but don't log onto the PC I can not access it on the network.

I know that PC's do not have to be logged in to be accessible over a wired LAN, but do they have to be logged in to be on a wireless network?

Unless you have a dedicated IP address set for your PC, you'll have the potential to lose any IP address information your PC may have stored.

No address, then your computer is unknown to the wireless network.

Hi, the first answer is not correct if you have a router and its set as a dhcp server it will issue an automatic IP address when you connect to it. On my router you can reserve an ip address so it always connects to that address. I run 3 pcs and 2 xbox's wired and wireless to the router. I can only print if the pc which the printer is plugged into is turned on. If you think about it when you press print on your wirless pc it send a signal to the router then through the pc which printer is connected to, to the printer. If its not turned on the printer cant receive the signal. You could try a wireless print server if you want to print. Am assuming that you have a usb printer. You could get an ethernet to usb print server which will plug into your router and convert your printer from usb to ethernet. You will then be able to configure the printer as you would do any other hardware. Hope this helps
