For the last two years full time employees are legally entitled to 20 days paid holiday per year. Bear in mind, Bank Holidays are NOT paid as of right and are at the employers discretion, i think we have 8 per year so if your employer treats these as part of your legal holiday entitlement he may only pay 12 but this would have to be made clear in your offer letter.

An employer has six months to issue you with a formal contract but must in the interim issue a letter of appointment outlining the main features of the position, start date, salary, holiday entitlement, Job title and description, your immediate superior and any other benefits you are entitled to along with any notice period due by either party.

Look carefully at the advert, did it say up to £, or depending on age and experience, or rasing to £ after training? if you are not being paid what was agreed then you should talk to your manager immediately.

I am sure the new law of 20 days comes into effect in April. Although in my company I only get 17 days holiday ( out of these I have to take a week at Christmas as the company shuts down) no payed sick leave, hospital, doctor dentist appointments etc. It is all up to the discretion of the employer.

You may not be entitled to a holiday for at least 3 months. Everyone should get at least 4 weeks' holiday every year, some may get more. Sick leave is not counted as holidays. Ask your employer for a copy of your contract - if they won't give you one, find out what the complaints procedure is at your work place & ask to see a copy of your contract, as you have a right to see it.

The Working Time Regulations state that all workers must be given four weeks' paid holiday per year. This right applies from the first day of employment.

You need to get a copy of your contract ASAP.
