its not a matter of sexuality. its a matter of that some body parts are not meant to be out in the open.in that case i'm going to start urinating in public.because is oh so natural.

In addition to some of the other things people have said, one of the reasons more mothers are opting to "not cover up" is that there are many other cultures where it is common to not cover up while breastfeeding. If you are from another culture, you may feel that's the appropriate way to breastfeed.

Also, constraining the breast too much while breastfeeding can actually lead to plugged milk ducts and breast infections. So, it's actually best to not cover up. It's certainly best to not wear an underwire bra or a bra with stiff parts or that becomes stiff when you move it aside to breastfeed.

Babies need lots of skin to skin contact. It's natural for them to need that. It helps in their development. So, breastfeeding without covering up helps the babies in that regard as well.

Some babies feel "confined" and don't like having a blanket over their heads nor a shirt pulled close to them when they are breastfeeding. If you have a baby like that, it's certainly easier to breastfeed without covering than to endure a crying baby.

In hotter climates, it gets hot to breastfeed your baby - all that close body contact - so it's even hotter to cover up when breastfeeding. And, it can be hot for the baby as well. Again, being uncovered can be best in these situations.

I hope this has given you some insight into other reasons a woman might choose not to cover, at least in some situations. Not everyone does it to shock people nor to make a point. There are some good reasons beyond the "is it sexual or is it natural" issues.

I breastfed all 4 of my children, and certainly in public. I did cover up a lot of the time, but there were some times when I didn't cover as much as some people would like. I think it's an individual decision and each mom should do what she feels is best for her and her baby.

A better question is.....Why do so many people jump to something so OUTLANDISH as to compare feeding a baby by breast to urinating or defecating in public? Instead of comparing it to it's most reasonable equivalent which would be...hmmm, let's see....EVERYONE ELSE EATING IN PUBLIC?...I mean DUR children and adults don't have to hide or cover up when they eat, why should babies who are doing so the natural way? Oh because "culture" says where they get their milk from is shameful? A "sexual organ" of some sort? Culture is often wrong folks. Why not compare a women exposing her breast in public to something more comparable like hmmm let's try our very best and think think THINK really hard!.....OH! How about males exposing their breasts in public and YES they are breasts (rather dormant ones but perfectly equal physiologically, erogenous and sometimes containing more fat and all that than some women's It shouldn't even matter if the mother is so called "making a scene"...In all honesty a women can't "make a scene" by showing her breast to feed a baby if men are allowed to show theirs for no reason at all. It is other people who have flawed, perverted, hypersexual, sexist, misogynist, anti-baby, prudish, corrupt religious thinking that cause such scenes. Why can men have their mostly non-functioning physiologically equal but underdeveloped mammaries out in public for no reason at all but women cannot even when theirs has a very vital common function such as feeding? Sure culture says cover up the set that serves as a buffet for babies but keep the useless one's out at will. Society is so sad and full of sexist morons.

I breast fed both of my children. I breast fed in public. I covered up most of the time, but not all of the time. No one really seemed to mind. I was never "exposed". The babies head covers most of the breast, the t-shirt that I was wearing covered the top of my breast. It's good if people can cover up when nursing in a public place, but if they can't or don't want to cover up their are ways to nurse a baby in public without being on display. Most people don't even realize a woman is nursing. Even without a blanket to cover up with, you can position your shirt and the baby just right so it looks like you are just cradling your baby. The more people try to stop nursing in public the more us nursing moms are going to "whip it out" So get used to it! It is the worst feeling in the world to be nursing at a restaurant and have someone from a different table come over and ask you to go feed your baby in the bathroom. That happened to me and I told the lady "How would you like to eat YOUR dinner on a toilet?" That time i was using a blanket. It is a situation were there is always going to be someone who is unhappy. I tell people if they don't like it why are they staring?

Breastfeeding is natural. Why is feeding your baby disgusting? Breasts are for babies to feed from. It's men that make them sexual.

BTW, when the times comes for me to breastfeed my child then I will not be ashamed to do it in public or the fact that people may accidentally see my breasts. I will have a more important purpose to do and that is to feed my newborn baby and not worry about other people think.

Check out this site.

"Welcome to take a different look at the controversial subject of woman's breasts at 007 Breasts - 007b.com! We believe women were not created as sexual objects to be looked upon as some kind of "toys", and breasts were not created for that purpose either. Female breasts have a purpose, and that purpose is the reason they exist. They were given to us as the means of Breastfeeding our babies! This website is for the purpose of studying and promoting that very subject."

Define covering up. When I was nursing my first, they were selling breast feeding "tents" that were hideous and huge, and drew even more attention to the mom. Sometimes it's just more efficient to lift your shirt and not use any props. But no, I would not whip out a breast in public (nursing or not).

There has to something wrong with you if you sexualize a breast while it has a 4 month old hanging off of it. I had a friend whose wife would whip out her DDs anywhere and start feeding her baby. Did not bother her at all. She said it was hard for her to think of them as sexual objects while her daughter was feeding.

it is only disgusting to ignorant people, it seems women doing natural things is disgusting but pamela anderson and jordan get paid loads of money for showing theirs, in the sun newspapaer, there are page three women, yet there is no uproar, breastfeeding is such beautiful bonding experience with your child, men will not physically see your breast, it seems that act is deemed disguting to fools, choose your literature carefully, as the author may be anti- breastfeeding or worst a male

Grow up and recognize that breast feeding is NOT a sexual event...and should not be equated with such....it is natural and is practiced openly in many countries. The US has warped attitudes as we all should know [yet is probably one of the most perverse know to man!]
