pH is the INVERSE Log of the concentration of hydrogen ions in a system. Concentrations are measured in MOLARITY, but pH has no units. Pepsin and other stomach enzymes work best in acid conditions. Alkaline phosphatase works well in alkaline conditions.

Enzymes have varying conditions in which they are active. In the stomach some enzymes work best at an acidic pH of 2, for other enzymes, they operate at best at a nuetral pH.

Most enzymes are circulating in their inactive form called zymogens. This is a good thing because you wouldn't want enzymes active in the wrong area of the body.

Enzymes have a wide variety of conditions in which they are most active. This is dependent on

1) Temperature
2) pH
3) amount of substrate that is available to be bound to the enzyme

Ph is when there are conditions of acid and alkaline. The lesser the number of the ph gets, the acidic it becomes. The more the number increases the alkaline it becomes. I don't know about alkaline but acidic is pepsin.

pH is a measure of the acidity of a solution it is defined quantitatively by the formula
pH = - log(10){[H+9aq)]/mol dm-3}
as the ionic product for water is 1 x 10-14 mol2 dm-6 at 25c and neutral water has equal concentrations of hydrogen and hydroxide ions, both have a value of 1 x 10-7 moldm-3, and hence neutral pH is -log10(1x10-7), that is 7.0 Acidic solutions have a pH lower than this and for 1 mol dm-3 strong acid pH = - log 10 1 =0.0 this is not a lower bound, however basic solutions have a pH higher than 7. for a 1 mol dm-3 strong base, such as NaOH(aq), [OH-] = 1 mol dm-3, and using the ionic product means [H+] = 1 x 10-14 mol dm-3 and hence pH = 14.0
