You should put a fraud alert on your credit report. You can do this by contacting TRW, Transunion and Experian through their respective websites. Some credit card companies will assist you in this also if you call them. That will prevent anyone from obtaining new credit in your name. Apparently, the individual(s) with your license have already demonstrated a propensity for fraud.

As for the credit card transaction, it seems that is the clerk's fault. Why would they accept your driver's license number as ID for someone else's credit card? The license and the credit card should match. It may be a headache as some stores will pursue civil remedies for the fraud despite the fact that you tell them it wasn't you. You simply have to ensure that you defend yourself if you receive any notifications from a collection agency or the store itself. Dispute the debt immediately, in writing, if you receive anything. Keep all of your documentation for the next few years. Create a folder and keep everything in it. As for the police, I don't know how different police agencies handle things throughout the world, but you should be safe as long as you have the report that was filed before the incident.

Hopefully, when you reported the theft of your license they police wrote a case on the theft!

If the theft was reported prior to the offense committed with the fraudulent use of your license...you shouldn't have a problem.

However, you're not clear as to how you learned about the fraudulent use. If it was the police that notified you....simply remind them of the report you filed. If it was the business that notified you, then you need to immediately report that information to the police who took your original complaint.

This will allow the police to further their investigation by means of contacting the business!

Also, you need to notify the state of your license theft and obtain a new license. This does several things that benefit you. It shows that you obtained a new license on a specific date which supports your situation and additionally the state becomes aware of a fraudulent use of the license not just the jurisdiction of where you reported that theft!

Best wishes!
