If it is the machine you are looking for, this is called pHmeter. It normally consists of a probe for the pH and another for the temperature and works by immersion into the solution you want to measure.

Easier ways of measure the pH of solutions include the addition of a pH indicator into the solution under study (whose color varies depending on the pH of the solution) or using a special paper which aslo changes color according to the acidity of the solution.

Are you talking about Litmus paper?

Other common PH indicators are phenolphthalein, methyl orange, phenol red, bromothymol blue, and bromocresol purple.
