Can anyone help? I have just bought a Pentuim 4 3.6GHZ 4Gb DDR 400 memory bundle. All seems fine except when I connect either of my Sata drives, they are both 250gb and were used yesterday on my other pc. the problem is that when i connect them i get safe mode choices but computer will not boot up. i have made sure all the jumpers and connectors are correct, Will I need to reinstall windows? is this because the previous computer was a AMD? and the configuartion are differant. Please help Cheers

You can't just transplant an XP installation from one PC to another. You can put your XP disc in a run the repair option at the second time of it asking if you want to repair (Don't do the first) But it will be risking the stability, and the best option is to perform a fresh new install. if you can wipe the drives off, you can even set the two drives up as a stripe set, which will run faster than just running of two seperate drives.

Yes you will and you have to use a OMD full not the Oh Sh1t disc that came with the machine probably when new.
The Original situation was that the XP would accept certain mods on the original but only up to so many points. I was told after six months it reset and you could then put in more mods.
The comeuppance to this is to either make sure you get a windows disc with the machine, get it without windows and install yourself, or not modify the machine seriously.
You can for example put in a bigger hard-drive, more DVD drives, different memory, but do all at once then you may have to reinstall windows from an OMD disc.
A little bird told me they had defeated that by setting the clock for 5 or six years ago and then doing one mod, resetting the clock for the next year and doing the next mod and so on and they had got away with added hard drive, and all other upgrades but could not do them all at once. A new mother board immediately stops the update and again a full install is necessary.

Each computer has a different set of drivers that control all the devices attached to it internally (CD, DVD, Sound Card, Video Card, etc.). Windows keeps track of all of those things for you and expects that they will remain the same when you boot your system. It is highly inadvisable to move a hard drive with an OS installed to a different system with different equipment and drivers. While it is technically possible to correct this with your current drive, it would be a maddening, time consuming affair. Your best bet is to install the drive (or better yet, a different, blank drive) into the new system, and reload Windows. During installation, Windows will check each of your system's components and install the best driver for each. Good Luck!

You have to reinstall XP. The normal license that comes from a shop is tied to the old PC and is not transferable. When you re-install and call India they probably won't let you move your license. Then you find you have to pay a huge amount for a new XP license just to carry on. Then you give up and install Ubuntu instead.

If you had AMD and now have pentium then YES you must reinstall windows as you have also changed the mother board, and EVERYTHING that was setup as far as busses and usb roots and so on has now changed. You can reinstall windows xp without the loss of your data though so it is no biggy.
