The Spanish Civil War was a very confused and ferocious fight between the Royalists (the party loyal to the King), the Republicans (who wanted a liberal constitution), the Anarcho-Syndicalists, who hated the Catholic Church and wanted to establish a utopian worker's state, the Communists, who wanted to establish a utopian state through class warfare, and the Fascists, who wanted to institute a dictatorship based around General Franco. Mussolini and Hitler wanted another Fascist state in Europe as a possible future ally in the next major war. Hitler wanted to test out new weapons and techniques, and wanted to give his army some combat experience. The same was true of Mussolini, although with him, as in all things international, he was a minor player.

Apart from the fact that Franco was a fascist, and therefore naturally supported by the German Nazis, the Spanish Civil War gave the Germans the opportunity to try out new weaponry such as aircraft . This gave their aircrew particularly training under battle conditions.

Because they saw him as a valuable potential ally in any future war with Spain's strategic position in the Mediterranean but also for ideological reasons because Franco was a staunch anti-Communist. They failed to realise however that Franco was above all a pragmatist who put his own self interest ahead of anything else.

Hitler helped Franco because of the fact that Franco had fascist ideals, much like himself. He only sent his air force to help, no ground troops. The Soviet Union supplied aid and weapons to the Royalist troops that fought for the government in Spain. This was also a time for Hitler to exercise his air force and get them ready for his plans to start his Blitzkrieg plans for Poland. His air force was invaluable with the experience they gained from their time in Spain.

I don't. I do so openly and proudly. You have a major problem with fascism, but seemt to think Communists are just fine. Here's a newsflash for you: Communists killed more people than Fascists ever thought of. I would support a fascist over a communist at each and every juncture.
