Yikes, you would not want to BUILD YOUR own like mine.

Consider look at a computer at a good retail store; that has Tech Support, good Return Policy. Then look at brands that have a good warrantee and good tech support.

So I recommend STAPLES, and I recommend a Compaq or HP desktop. OR a Toshiba laptop. For a printer, go with Canon. The color is better, the ink is less expensive. This covers everything that I outlined above. Buying a computer On-line only means HEADACHES. Poor tech support, Shipping costs, no possibility of RETURNS. HEY, the return rate on brand new computers is not ZERO, and even good brands will have a LEMON. So a retail store that will TAKE IT BACK is a great idea.

Here is what you need inside:
DVD/CD burner
1GB RAM or more - ask about exanding it to 2GB.
The latest processor - AMD 64 or Intel Core 2 Duo
If you have NO existing software, then go with Windows Vista
Flat Panel monitor - the bigger the better

- get a laptop ONLY if you must go Mobile. Laptops are the highest stolen item in America, and wireless poses an additional security threat.

Set a budget for youself. Yes, you can get a decent desktop for around $1000. If you buy a $700 system with Windows XP, then DO NOT plan on updating it to Windows Vista. Consider getting a NEW system with Windows Vista already installed. Simply don't plan on going through the Upgrade Hassle... Get it AWESOME now if you want Windows Vista.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

I have a Dell Laptop, a IBM NetVista for my server, and 2 Compaq Presarios. Dell are the most common seen in my shop for repairs. HP and Compaq are the same manufacturer, and require few if any repairs. IBM are very fussy, and the parts are expensive. So I recommend Compaq/HP. Stay away from eMachines, they aren't even worth the discussion here. Hope this helps

My general rule when shopping for computers is to look at the minimum requirements that I need for the programs that I will be running, and then try to double them. For example, if it says 256MB RAM required, then I would try to get at least 512MB RAM but in the end, just go for what you want with the best deal.
