English was the main language spoken (despite what Quebecois say) and the American accent is a bastardisation of English from all those immigrant languages way back when. Like parrots, we mimic others to arrive at our accent. Personally, as an Englishman, I like the SW and Deep South accents.

Americans have many different types of accents that come from many different influences. Some research suggests Americans don't sound like Brits or Aussies because we made a conscious effort to spell things differently and as english pronunciation progressed in America our accents evolved.

America has always had its own accent, but it also depends on which part you are from. It is difficult to say because of the Migratory habits of man.In England,we have Scotland and Wales. All our accents are different. So they have their own native accent. They also have their own language in Wales.

There is no such thing as an "American" accent. There are many many different accents just within the U.S. just like in other countries.

think of it just like genetic evolution.. accents are like genes, and they mix together, go through some sort of selection process (a.k.a. "fitness test" as in survival of the fittest), and then semi-randomly drift. areas of the country effectively become isolated from eachother and develop accents of their own.
