The term India may refer to either the region of Greater India (the Indian subcontinent), or to the contemporary Republic of India contained therein. The term is derived from the name of the Indus River and has been in use in Greek since Plutarchus (1st century AD). The term appears in Old English in the 9th century, and again in Modern English since the 17th century.

The Republic of India has three principal short names, in both official and popular English usage, each of which is historically and culturally significant. All three originally designated a single entity comprising all the modern nations of the Indian subcontinent. These names are India, Bharat and Hindustan. The first Article of the Constitution of India states that "India, that is Bharat, shall be a union of states." Thus, India and Bharat are equally official short names for the Republic of India, while Hindustan is considered antiquated and is mostly used in historical contexts (especially British India).

The name India appears in the texts written by travellers to India
in the olden days, from Europe and China. In one such Chinese
text, it is explined that the name India originated from the word
Indu which means Moon in Indian languages. The puranas say
that Moon learned and accumulated a lot of knowledge from
many Rishis. In astrology, planet Moon is the seat of all
knowledge, and particularly higher knowledge.

Among all countries in the world, India has
inherited the largest number of ancient manuscripts from
time immemorial. They were written on the widest range of
subjects known to humans. Indians were the originators of
all higher knowledge in the ancient times.

Why India was called Bhaarata Desam? Most of the
people of the present generation think that India
was named after emperor Bharata. This interpretation is
probably not very old, may be some hundreds of years. Is
there any other land in the world which is named after a
male? Religions of all lands treat the earth as a female,
the mother goddess. Before the spread of Christianity, all
countries in Europe were named after the local mother
goddesses. The same is true for all other lands in the
world. A Telugu poet wrote
the following line: "Pogadaraa nee thalli bhoomi
Bhaarathini" - praise your mother land Bhaarati! India was
named after Bhaarati (Saraswati), the goddess of
knowledge. No other ancient civilization of the world
could claim this coveted title. The world's oldest
educational institutions were located in India, and
scholars from China and Europe used to come here for
learning. There is another name for India -Yilaa Varta.
The hidden words in this name (LY VRT)
is Bhaarati Aalaya, the temple of goddess Bhaarati.

It came from river Indus (also known as Sindhu), It is a land around River Indus so called India

The name India is derived from Indus, which is derived from the Old Persian word Hindu, from Sanskrit Sindhu, the historic local appellation for the Indus River. The Constitution of India and common usage in Hindi also recognise Bharat as an official name of equal status. A third name, Hindustan (Persian: Land of the Hindus), has been in use since the 12th century, though its contemporary use is unevenly applied.
